Project preparation

Compare renovation quotes on the same scope

Look beyond the total and clarify materials, preparation, exclusions and changes.

Send the same brief to everyone

Two totals are difficult to compare when they describe different work. Start with a room-by-room list of the changes you want, the surfaces involved and the items that will stay. Give each person the same photographs and preliminary measurements. Mark these measurements as approximate until verified. If a discussion changes the scope, update the brief so that later comparisons still refer to the same project.

Understand what each line includes

Ask for descriptions of preparation, installation and finishing rather than relying on broad labels such as room refresh. For materials, check whether the quoted amount refers to a specific product, an allowance or labor only. Confirm which quantities have been verified. Different assumptions about surface preparation, trim, removal or cleanup can change the total even when the headline service appears identical.

Make exclusions and decisions visible

Keep a written list of items that are not included and choices that remain open. A material allowance is different from a confirmed selection. A preliminary estimate is different from an agreed price for a defined scope. Ask how revised quantities, changed selections or additional work would be discussed and documented. The goal is to identify uncertainty before the project starts, not to assume that every possible situation is already included.

Compare the process as well as the number

Discuss access to the property, material availability and how project updates will be shared. Clarify whether a stated duration means active working days or an overall calendar window. Keep the scope, selected materials and agreed changes together in one project record. A clear comparison helps you understand what is being offered and which questions still need answers before you choose how to proceed.
